“Every late request we ever investigated failed in the gap between two teams.”
Jonah Achterberg, co-founder
Jonah Achterberg and Ada Quint met running operations at a logistics scale-up. Between them they had rebuilt the same request process in four different tools — and watched it fail the same way each time: at the hand-off.
Kilter began as an internal tool that did one thing well: make sure every piece of work had an owner and a clock. When other teams asked to borrow it, it became a company.
Today Kilter is used by operations, finance, service and revenue teams to run the recurring work that keeps a business moving. We are a team of fifty-eight across three offices, and we still review our own processes in Kilter every week.

Five rules
we try to keep.
01
Coordination, not replacement
Software should route, remind and record. Judgement belongs to people.
02
Every workflow explains itself
If the system can’t say why it did something, it shouldn’t do it.
03
Measure from the work
Reporting that has to be compiled by hand is reporting nobody trusts.
04
Calm by default
Digests over pings. Interrupt people only when it matters.
05
Earn the next process
Teams should add a workflow because the last one helped, not because they were told to.

of a long problem.
